Welcome to the Work from Home news for today! I hope you are safe and keeping healthy as well. I am on the lookout on my web trotting journeys for sources on how to help us all work effectively from home. (Although I might add I have been working from home as a Virtual Assistant for many years after leaving full time work as a Secretary.)
It is difficult to maintain a work/home life balance and to keep the two areas separate. To avoid this stress, you need to set up a strict timetable for each day. It is easy to get sidetracked when it is a beautiful sunny day outside and you are stuck indoors working hard on urgent projects. You need to stick to your schedule, otherwise you will get stressed. Allow some time to have 10 minute breaks as you do at your office, by going for a walk outside for 10 minutes, exercise or having a hot cuppa! Here are some tips:
- Organise: It is very difficult to work from home if you are distracted by your untidy/disorganised/noisy home! To avoid this stress, try and keep your home clean and organised. Or set aside a separate area at home or room for an office.
- Set up Boundaries: Do not mix your home tasks with your work tasks during the day.
- Do not get distracted outside your work schedule and also vice versa.
- Punctuality @ Home: Start work at the time you usually start work at your office – 9am
- Stop work at the time you usually leave your office in the evening – 5pm.
- Healthy Breaks: Schedule in Meal breaks for 10 minutes for Mid Morning and Afternoon break and Lunch Hour break.
- Clean and tidy your home/office at the end of the day or early morning
Family/Friends communications:
What to do when family/friend phone you during your work time or you have other family members also working/studying from home?
You will need to notify your family/friends that you will be working on the set days and times and to avoid unnecessary phone calls/emails/texts until later in the day or on the weekends.
The same rule will apply also to any visitors.
Timetable/Schedule:
- Draw up a Timetable Schedule for each person and pin the handwritten or typed Paper on to your Fridge door or Home Notice Board. Pin up extra copies in each person’s bedroom as well.
